‘He lives. The King’s son lives. Damianos.’

pacat-kings-risingDamianos of Akielos has returned.

His identity now revealed, Damen must face his master Prince Laurent as Damianos of Akielos, the man Laurent has sworn to kill.

On the brink of a momentous battle, the future of both their countries hangs in the balance. In the south, Kastor’s forces are massing. In the north, the Regent’s armies are mobilising for war. Damen’s only hope of reclaiming his throne is to fight together with Laurent against their usurpers.

Forced into an uneasy alliance the two princes journey deep into Akielos, where they face their most dangerous opposition yet. But even if the fragile trust they have built survives the revelation of Damen’s identity – can it stand against the Regent’s final, deadly play for the throne?

I had so many questions running through my head when I picked up this book. Would it live up to the first two, released so many years ago? Would the ending provide me with the satisfaction that I craved? Would Laurent and Damen ever finally get the happily ever after that they so desperately deserve?

For the first two questions, the answer is a resounding yes. As for that third question, though… well, you’ll have to read to find out for yourself!

Things you will find in Kings Rising: lush prose that will sweep you off your feet; epic battle scenes written so perfectly that you can feel the ground trembling beneath pounding hooves; calculating wit, and plots that look like a tangle of threads until they suddenly become an elegantly composed tapestry.

And something else that you’ll find: two men, both fighting for what is rightfully theirs, and who complement each other perfectly: cunning Laurent, and guileless Damen.

‘No. Listen Damianos. You trust blindly. You see the world in absolutes– if you believe someone a foe, nothing will dissuade you from arming up to fight. But when you give your affections… When you give a man your loyalty, your faith in him is unswerving. You would fight for him with your last breath, you would hear no word spoken against him, and you would go to the grave with his spear in your side.’

I think a lot of words will eventually be used to describe this book, but among them will no doubt be “outstanding”, “enthralling”, and “cunning”. Furthermore, the trilogy is setting a new bar for LGBT+ novels; it is among the first (if not the first) gay romance to be carried in mainstream bookstores in the Romance section!

I’ll end by saying this: A perfect conclusion to an already-perfect series.

I received a copy of this novel from Berkley Publishing Group in exchange for a fair and honest review.
