Trigger Warnings:
Attempted Suicide

JD Glass has a really interesting writing style, which I alternate between really enjoying and being really confused by. That held true with First Blood, which was a fascinating story, but with some moments were I completely lost track of what was going on.

The beginning was the most confusing part. It starts with an attempted suicide (TRIGGER WARNING!) and then suddenly transitions into a magical story. Samantha changes her name, and starts to heal. Sounds straight-forward, but the story really starts mid-emotional crisis, and I never quite recovered enough to figure out what was going on.

But the story does eventually pick up. Now going by Ann, she starts learning about her powers, and the world-building was really fascinating. It felt very mythological, and if the light vs. dark ongoing battle was a little predictable… well, that’s what I enjoy about fantasy novels!

The romance was again hit or miss. I did really like Fran, especially the way she integrates herself into Ann’s new life. The relationship was very well done. But again the writing style had me pausing on occasion.

This is a really enjoyable novel, but one that you may have to work a bit to become absorbed in.  It’s worth the effort in the end though!

(After reading the book, I learned that this is apparently part of an on-going series, which may explain a lot of the confusion I faced!)
