This is a book that will require you to suspend your disbelief/reality while you read it in order to enjoy it because it was super tropey. Luckily Pace does a good job of engaging your interest and making you invest in Ben and James, so you end up just going “sure why not?”

The beginning of the book was pretty sex heavy, but Pace did a good job of moving away from that to show the developing feelings between James and Ben. By the end of the book you could tell that the whole sex-only thing they agreed upon was not going to work. It made James’ actions (no spoilers!) at the end of the book more believable.

A side character I ended up really liking was Jame’s sister Indigo. She had social anxiety and other problems, but fair warning if you get triggered she is a self cutter so don’t read this if that will be a problem for you (highlight to read). I am hoping they do more to develop her in the next book.

I cannot spoil the ending but there were certain parts that I wish were written out instead of us being told they happened. Isn’t a “rule” of writing show not tell? This ended up making the ending kind of abrupt. That being said, the rest of the book was quite enjoyable.

The ending of the book may or may not have been a cliffhanger. You can for sure read this book alone, but it may be frustrating if you don’t like any kind of cliffhanger. I am curious if this book was originally written as one book but split by the publisher because of page requirements, because the ending seems kind of randomly chosen.

If you are someone who gets angry about any kind of cliffhanger I would wait until book two comes out. I am personally excited to read the next one and review it here for you!

Lilah Pace is a pseudonym for a New York Times bestselling author, so she can’t give away too much about herself here, but she has lived everywhere from Italy to the United Kingdom before putting down roots in the American South.

She’s addicted to Diet Coke, loves her dog, and daydreams about several British movie stars (though usually no more than two at a time).

And while it took her a long while to get up the courage to write books, now she hopes she’ll never stop.

Find out more about Pace and her books over at her website (click here!). I wish I could figure out which bestselling author this is but that website won’t tell you :(((

  1. I read this as X-men fanfiction. It was called Anarchy in the U.K. I thought it was quite good, so learning it was witten by the same author who published Asking for it was a surprise. Now I will read it right away, though I don’t normally read f/m anymore.

    • Thanks for the heads up on it being an x-men fic. Was it Charles/Eric? I may need to track that down.

Everyone else ignore this comment. I AM A SERIOUS READER OK

  2. I know the author as the author of the Asking for It books. Although it sounds v. enticing, I’m one of those people who are gonna have to wait for the second book before I can even begin to think of reading this one.

Thank you for the heads’ up about the potential cliffhanger.

  3. Yes, it was. I think the author perhaps chose to call the prince James because Charles Xavier beeing played by James McAvoy? The authors Name on AO3 is Yahtzee. I don’t know if it is still there though. Haven’t checked. I read it as a finished ff. So luckily there was no cliffhanger for me 😉
