Terrence Moss. Conrad Harris. Gold Team Leader. Darius Hawthorne. The Vault. Juggling all these names would bother some, but for Darius, it’s business as usual. When he closes a chapter in his life, he leaves a name—and the people associated with it—behind. He’s managed to keep a few colleagues, even fewer friends, and no companionship through his forty-plus years… but that’s now changing.

The newest chapter of his life is bringing serious change: a stable home, a recovered identity, an unlikely family, and now a chance encounter with the one man Darius ever loved: Efrem Lahm. The reasons they parted are still valid, and there’s no way they can trust each other. But Efrem has already decided he won’t let Darius go… and Darius will have to decide if he wants to take a chance with his heart this late in the day.

When I finished Late in the Day, I’d thought that reviewing this would be difficult to do without spoilers. Well, I was right. Mary Calmes has a way of making you care about her side characters. Even if these characters are only in a book for a few pages at most and are then gone again. She makes you want to know more about these people, how they’re doing, if they ever got away from the bad life they were living, and if they’re happy. It’s one of those Mary Magic things. And wouldn’t you know, there are some of those characters, from other books and series, that make an appearance in Late in the Day. So there’s the rub because I want to talk about all the things! I’m sitting here wanting to discuss this with someone who has read these books, who knows these characters, and who loves these tie-ins as much as I do. I want to talk about who is in this…. I just want to talk about all the people and what these characters being in this book could mean. I want to theorize.

And that’s about as much as I can tell you… about that at least.

This book is a lot of fun. I’m talking FUN. This is largely due to all those characters that pop in and who are a part of Terrence Conrad Darius’ life. I was so very entertained by this. Darius knows a lot of people, not all of them really the most reputable, at least with law enforcement, but finding out who these people are, the people he chooses to call friends and learning more about them was simply awesome. There are charismatic characters in many of Mary’s books, but having a bunch of them all in one book is great.

Where I feel the story fell a bit short is in the relationship between Darius and Lahm. Specifically, their reunion, the story of them finding their way to each other. There is plenty of past revealed, but I really felt like I needed more on the other side of the coin. I felt like I was missing a piece of them, and really, a large piece of Lahm. Efrem Lahm is very quickly introduced to readers in book 2 of the Marshals series. It’s a quick couple of pages, but in those pages a little bit of that Mary Magic happens and I was so curious to know more about him. Well now I do, just not as much as I was expecting. And I think because of this, I was having a hard time with the connection the two men are supposed to have… at least in the present. But only a little bit.

Still, I really did enjoy this and for all of you out there who love Mary’s books, this one is a must read.

Mary Calmes believes in romance, happily ever afters, and the faith it takes for her characters to get there. She bleeds coffee, thinks chocolate should be its own food group, and currently lives in Kentucky with a five-pound furry ninja that protects her from baby birds, spiders and the neighbor’s dogs. To stay up to date on her ponderings and pandemonium (as well as the adventures of the ninja) follow her on Twitter @MaryCalmes, connect with her on Facebook, and subscribe to her Mary’s Mob newsletter.
