A TRAGIC BEGINNING…

Isadora Nikitas understands what it means to be betrayed. That lesson was taught to her in the prime of her life, and when she is offered a chance to exact revenge, she finds it difficult to refuse.
Instead, she entrusts her survival to a mysterious vampire known only as Diomêdês, a male who wants nothing in return but to watch over her—in every way imaginable.

Gifted with speed, strength, and immortality, she determines that her life will no longer be governed by the needs and wants of a mere man. She has cowered for the last time, and with her Ancient by her side, she thrives and blossoms into the most formidable female vampire in existence.

But, once upon a time, like all little girls, Isadora believed in love. She believed it because she once had it. So, when it comes along a second time, she knows that it’s possible—but when you love someone, they become your weakness. Unless, in fact, they become your enemy instead…

A MYSTERIOUS PAST…

Fulfilling your life’s prophecy should be empowering. At least, that’s what Elias Fontana always believed. But, as he stands guard over the beautiful vampire he’s taken hostage, his convictions start to crumble. Made to believe by his creators that he and two others have been designed to destroy a dangerous race, he has difficulty connecting his current reality to the woman he once loved.

A TANGLED TALE TO UNRAVEL…

When friends become enemies and enemies become lovers, who can you trust in the webs of lies and despair? And, when your life is at stake and blood has been shed, how much are you willing to sacrifice to fulfill your destiny?

Dark, delightful, and absolutely delicious! Ella Frank is a well-known name in the M/M genre (and the Romance genre in general!), but Alasdair is something new from the author of the sweet and sexy Temptation trilogy. This is paranormal horror and romance at its finest.

Can I compare this to Anne Rice? Too bad, I’m doing it anyways. Ella jump starts the vampire romance genre with the first in this new trilogy– a genre which has been saturated with vampires that sparkle– and brings back the wicked protagonist that I love to read! This is Anne Rice for the M/M genre, for sure!

(And it’s the first in a new trilogy? YES PLEASE!)

Bestowed with eternal life by the Ancient Vasilios, Alasdair Kyriakous is one of the most feared and ruthless vampires in existence. His name carries weight across all of the seven continents.

But he is a mystery to his kind, an anomaly among the self-indulgent. While he enjoys the pleasures of the flesh, he is exceptionally particular in his choice of partners and prides himself on his ironclad self-control.

Thrust into a world he could never have imagined, Leo Chapel awakens in his worst nightmare. Taken hostage by the dangerously mesmerizing vampire, Alasdair, Leo must rely on his intelligence to escape before he reveals a secret he isn’t even aware he’s hiding.

This book was sinfully addictive; I pretty much devoured it like a vampire in need of a good meal. Alasdair isn’t a hero, and Ella doesn’t try to make him into one. He’s unapologetically 100% vampire, with everything that denotes. And while he may not be as free with his lust as his fellow vampires, he’s not above doing whatever it takes to get what (or who) he wants.

frank-alasdair-quote3

Leo, on the other hand, is sweet and naive in many ways. He has a layer of toughness, and he’s fiercely independent, but he’s also unwilling to stand up for himself at times. In fact, it’s his decision not to challenge others that draws Alasdair to him in the first place, when Leo chooses to leave his own birthday party rather than deal with a handsy stranger. It makes him prey, in Alasdair’s eyes, and the vampire is eager for a hunt.

“He’s uncommon for a human. Wouldn’t you agree?”
“You mean he’s appealing and you want to fuck him.”
“Well, that too.” (Kindle Loc. 600)

Now, there are a few things you should be aware of before jumping into this book:

Don’t think it’s going to be just like Ella’s Temptation trilogy!

While I definitely noticed some similarities between Alasdair’s character and Logan’s, these are definitely two very different series, which very different characters. The Temptation series had it’s darker moments, but was mostly light-hearted, fun, and incredibly sexy. With the first book in the Monsters series, Frank has instead written an incredibly dark novel. Alasdair’s arrogance may make you think of Logan, and aspects of Tate may be found in Leo’s innocence and determination, but this is a book about monsters, plain and simple.

This human was curious in the most unusual ways. Asking questions Alasdair would think would horrify him. But the telltale signs of arousal told him otherwise and had Alasdair fighting every instinct he had to keep his teeth off of him. (Kindle Loc. 903)

Beware the darkness!

I can’t emphasize enough how dark parts of this novel is. There are scenes that read (to me at least) as dubious consent. There is violence and gore. But at no point did I feel like it was overdone, or too much. The darker emotions and themes fit the novel very well, and Alasdair’s character never reads as the “redeemable” one. He is what he is, and even the feelings that he begins to develop for Leo are shrouded in the darkness.

“My confusion. My fear. It turns you on, right? What kind of sick fuck are you?”

“Is that a trick question?” Alasdair asked, unhooking the chain. “I’m not a person, Leonidas. I’m vampire. That’s the kind of sick fuck I am.” (Kindle Loc. 927)

frank-alasdair-quote2

Final Verdict:

I loved this book. I really did. I grew up sneaking Anne Rice books into my bedroom, because my parents had forbidden me from reading them until I was older, so I have a deep love for dark vampire novels. Ella Frank writes fantastic characters with complex backgrounds, and there’s a mystery throughout the novel that is intriguing but not overwhelming to the character development.

This is the first book in a trilogy, so keep in mind that the mystery and plot will not be resolved here. But if you’re looking for a delightfully wicked and dark novel, you should absolutely check this out.

(And if you want something lighter and more fun, but still very sexy, I cannot recommend Ella’s Temptation trilogy highly enough!)

Bi Visibility Day: Romances with Bisexual Characters

Bi Visibility Day

September 23 marks Bi Visibility Day, a day for celebrating bisexuality and teaching people more about what it means to be bi. Bisexual Invisibility is a very real issue, so we set aside a day to promote and bring awareness to what bisexuality is!

wordpress blog stats

Bi Visibility Day - LOL

From the San Francisco Human Rights Commission:

Bisexuals experience high rates of being ignored, discriminated against, demonized, or rendered invisible by both the heterosexual world and the lesbian and gay communities.3 Often, the entire sexual orientation is branded as invalid, immoral, or irrelevant. Despite years of activism and the largest population within the LGBT community, the needs of bisexuals still go unaddressed and their very existence is still called into question. This erasure has serious consequences on bisexuals’ health, economic well-being, and funding for bi organizations and programs.

bisexual-invisibility

Since this is a book blog, I wanted to mention three of my favorite books with bisexual main characters. When I tag my book reviews, I try to specify the sexuality of the pairing as well as the genders of the characters in that pairing (for instance, ‘gay’ and ‘m/m’, or ‘bisexual’ and ‘m/m’, or ‘bisexual’ and ‘f/m’). The M/M Romance genre is notorious for bi invisibility, where a bisexual character (ie, one who has relationships with both male and female partners in canon) is consistently labeled as ‘gay’ throughout the story.

There are a lot of book with bi characters, especially in the last couple of years, but I wanted to focus on three where the bisexuality is explicitly (and often explicitly) shown.

The Girl Next Door, by Amy Jo Cousins
Read my review here (5/5 stars)

This is a really fantastic romance set in contemporary Chicago. When Cash’s cousin shows up on his doorstep, alone and fresh out of the closet, he turns to the first person he can think of for help: Stephany Tyler. Back in the day, the bisexual Steph was the perfect friend with benefits until she fell in love with a woman.

Steph is openly and unashamedly bisexual, and her sexuality is discussed and referenced throughout the novel. Plus, the plot and the romance are excellently written!

carey-kushiels-dart

Kushiel’s Dart, by Jacqueline Carey
Published: September 2003

This is a classic in the romance genre. Set in an alternate Europe with strong fantasy elements, it follows Phèdre nó Delaunay, a woman born with an unusual (and highly coveted) gift: she experiences pain as pleasure. The motto of this world is love as thou wilt, and Phèdre has encounters and falls in love with both males and females.

While the word bisexual is never used in this novel (it’s a fantasy, after all), Phèdre is very much a bisexual character (as are many others). Now, before you run out and buy this novel, be warned: there’s a lot of S&M here, and a lot of sex. But the books are full of intrigue and passion and tons of cleverly-done historical references, so it’s a blast to read!

Try, by Ella Frank
Published: November 2013

We’ve had some awesome bi ladies, so how about some awesome bi guys! If you haven’t heard of Ella Frank’s Temptation trilogy, then sit back and let me introduce you to your new favorite erotic series! Tate is newly-divorced and has just started as a bartender in downtown Chicago. When Logan Mitchell walks in one night, everything changes. Tate has always thought of himself as straight… but Logan tempts, teases, and convinces Tate to give men a try.

Logan is most definitely bisexual. The very first scene in the book is him joining the Mile High Club with a woman! And Tate, fresh out of marriage to a woman, isn’t sure what he is… but he knows that he’s drawn to Logan’s charm and sexual appeal.

These books are overflowing with sex. ALL OF THE SEX. The second and third book are entirely M/M, but Logan is definitely getting busy with the men and the ladies in this book.
